..........This issue begins with a paper by Wachira and colleagues who investigated the relationship between perceived social support and recognized occupational distress among African American Clergy. The study found that higher social support resulted in lower occupational distress, supporting previous research indicating social support as a buffer for such distress. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the crucial role of African American churches and clergy members in our communities. Despite the compelling evidence pointing to their vulnerability, clergy often do not perceive themselves as being at risk. This is an important study as it recognizes the unique needs of this historically understudied demographic and underscores the need for sustained efforts that “support the supports” who regularly serve in diverse and demanding roles as informal first responders to their communities in times of distress................
